How to choose and clean your paint brushes

How much should I pay for a good paint brush?

The price of a good quality paint brush varies from 10 to 25$. With such a large variety of paint brushes offered on the market, having to choose the right one may seem overwhelming. The selection of the bristle, the size and the angle of the brush is largely a choice of preference. Be aware: An economical paint requires a good brush and a high-quality paint deserves a good brush!

How many times can I reuse my paint brush and my paint roller?

That all depends on several factors such as the quality of the brush, the maintenance and the storage. A good, well-maintained paint brush can be used several times, over a period of several years. For example, all the paint work I have done in the last seven years was done with the same paint brush!

However, it is less advisable to reuse a paint roller. Each wash spoils the roller, which makes it less absorbent to paint and creates an orange peel finish on your painted surfaces.

How should I clean my paint brush after using it?

Start by squeezing out the excess paint with the rim of your paint container.

If you applied a water-based paint, you can simply clean your brush with soapy water or with our Polyclean product if the paint has begun to dry. You can also soak your brush in a mixture of water and white vinegar. Ideally, do not wait for the paint to harden as this makes the cleaning task a little more difficult.

If you applied an oil paint, you should use our MF Sol paint solvent. When your brush is clean, hang it so it can dry.

Be sure to never throw solvent and remaining paint into the sink, the tub or the garbage as these are considered environmentally harmful. In fact, several service centers recycle these products.

Is the paint brush comb really a must?

The paint brush comb or steel brush is an indispensable tool when cleaning brushes. It reduces cleaning time and makes it much easier to remove excess paint. In addition, a brushed silk paint brush keeps its original shape longer.

How should I store my paint brush for it to remain in good condition?

If possible, store the paint brush in it’s original packaging. If you no longer have it, pack the silk brush in a newspaper. Make sure the brush is suspended or stores flat so that the bristles won’t get damaged.
